GSMA M360 AFRICA, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, 11 - 13 July 2017

800 stakeholders from the mobile industry, providers, mobile operators and investors gathered during these 3 days to discuss the state of the industry, to evaluate digital access and inclusion, network coverage and customers’ quality of experience.

We have been invited by the GSMA to participate to an interactive session focusing on emerging policy and regulatory trends linked to mobile SIM registration, best practice on how to create an enabling environment for digital identity and the role mobile operators in providing consumers’ access to life-enhancing services.

The session looked at examples of some of the digital identity solutions that are being trialled across the region. We had the opportunity to showcase our latest Digital Identity pilot performed in Kenya. 

Members of Digital Identity Program of the GSMA stressed that the ability to prove one’s identity is essential to securing a number of life-enhancing services such as healthcare, education, financial services, connectivity and social protections.  However, an estimated 1.1 billion people worldwide lack formal identification, predominantly in developing countries in Sub-Saharan Africa and Asia.  Whilst many people lack formal identification, mobile phone penetration is increasing, with even the most rural communities frequently having access to mobile phones.  As a result mobile technology has the unique opportunity to provide socially impactful and commercially sustainable digital identity solutions in developing markets.
